Context & challenge
Within international development programmes, migration and gender dynamics are deeply interconnected. For the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), teams working in West Africa needed practical tools to analyse these dynamics and translate them into gender-responsive project decisions. The challenge was to make complex social, cultural and policy frameworks usable for programme managers and field teams operating in diverse local contexts.
Design approach & solution
As information designer, I was responsible for translating complex conceptual frameworks into clear, structured visual systems, defining the information architecture, visual logic and usability of the tools. I worked in close collaboration with content experts Nyske Janssen (founder To Untangle, specialist in systems thinking and diversity and inclusion) and Dr. Oumoul Khaïry Coulibaly (gender and migration expert), ensuring alignment with SDC’s programme objectives and working practices. Together, we developed two complementary visual frameworks that connect analytical insight with practical application throughout the programme cycle.
The Gender & Migration Cycle
A structured analytical tool that helps teams identify root causes, power relations and gender-specific risks and opportunities throughout different phases of migration. The cycle visualises abstract concepts such as vulnerability, agency and structural inequality in a way that supports discussion and evidence-based analysis.
Objective:
To create visual tools that support both gender analysis in migration contexts and gender-responsive project implementation, enabling consistent, informed decision-making throughout the programme cycle.
The Gender-Responsive Project Management Cycle
A practical roadmap that guides teams in embedding gender considerations into each phase of project design, implementation and evaluation. This tool builds on the analytical insights of the migration cycle and translates them into concrete actions and checkpoints within programme management. Together, these tools form a coherent system connecting analysis and implementation.
